The wax seal

Placing a wax seal on personal stationery is a gesture rich in meaning.

Inherited from ancient customs, it long served to authenticate and distinguish written correspondence. Even today, it retains its full symbolic power.

It seals and protects a message, enhances a personal creation, and gives each piece of correspondence a unique and solemn dimension.

From the choice of seal to the shade of wax, every detail matters in revealing the singular character of an object designed to stand the test of time.

A bespoke impression

A wax seal, composed of an engraved matrix and a handle, rests on the balance of three essential elements.

The seal defines the impression. Precisely engraved, it bears a distinctive sign — coat of arms, monogram, logo, or bespoke motif — that is immediately recognisable.

The wax, available in a range of shades to complement your stationery perfectly, reveals its material presence.

Finally, the paper, through its texture and weight, enhances this personalised impression.

At the crossroads of exceptional French artisanal heritage and contemporary communication, we design and create entirely bespoke signature objects.

Since 1880, every piece entrusted to our Maison has received the utmost care, from the rigorous selection of materials and precision of the design to the expert mastery of engraving techniques and refined finishes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wax seal used for today?

A wax seal can be used to seal an envelope or document while adding a distinctive visual signature. Traditionally used to guarantee the authenticity of correspondence, it is now valued for the aesthetic and symbolic dimension it brings to personal stationery, including announcements, invitations, envelopes, and documents.

Can a wax seal be matched to bespoke stationery?

Yes, a wax seal can be harmonised with your bespoke stationery — envelopes, announcements, cards, or letterheads — through the choice of motif and wax colour.

How do you apply a wax seal?

The seal is engraved in reverse and in intaglio on a brass die. Once melted and still supple, the wax receives the impression of the seal: the motif then appears raised and the right way round before setting as it cools. The resulting impression is clear and lasting. To use Benneton Graveur sealing wax sticks, cut a piece of wax approximately one centimetre long and place it in a sealing wax spoon. Gently melt the wax by holding the spoon above a candle flame. Once the wax is warm, pour several drops onto the desired area. Wait a few seconds for the wax to thicken, then press your seal firmly into the wax for two to three seconds.

What does a bespoke bookmark project involve?

The creation of a bespoke wax seal includes several stages: an initial conversation about your project and wishes; the preparation and approval of a quote; the development of graphic proposals and approval of a proof; the production of your wax seal; and a final stage of manual quality control, carried out by our team.Your order is then carefully packaged and made available for collection at our Paris boutique. Should you prefer postal delivery, options and conditions vary according to the destination. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with further information. Delivery times and associated costs depend on the destination.

How long does it take?

Production times vary according to the specifications of each piece. As a guide, please allow between one and six weeks from approval of the project to dispatch. An estimated timeframe will be provided at the beginning of the project.
